Firemen removing the metal rod from the child’s body
KOTA MARUDU: A five-year-old is in critical condition after he fell on an iron rod which pierced through his chest and neck near SK Tandek in Kampung Tandek, Friday.

It was learnt that he was walking with his mother towards a grocery store when it happened. The mother rushed him to Kota Marudu Hospital, which had to summon the Fire and Rescue Department for help in removing it.

Kota Marudu Fire and Rescue Station Chief Asst Fire Supt Mohd Hasbi Hajat said they received an emergency call at 6.31pm. The personnel managed to remove it using special equipment.

“The condition of the victim could not be ascertained because he was put to sleep to facilitate the operation. The iron was successfully removed,” he said, adding operations ended at 7.09 pm.

This is the third case of piercing mishaps reported this year. The previous two involved iron spear fishing rods.

In Ranau, an 18-year-old was pierced by a fishing rod which struck his arm in February. The second incident also in February involved a 25-year-old in Kota Belud who had his thigh pierced by a rod. In both cases, it was due to carelessness.

Friday’s case was similar to that which happened in Kota Kinabalu in 2014, where an iron rod pierced the cheeks of a 10-year-old boy who fell near a drain.
