Zakat Fitrah rate for Sabah set at RM7.50

Kota Kinabalu: The Zakat Fitrah rate for Sabah for this year is set at RM7.50 for every Muslim in the region.

Muis President Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin said the rate was based on the measurement of one Baghdad bushel or 2.7kg of rice which is consumed by the majority of the people of Sabah.

“Muis also appointed a total of 40 Amil (zakat collectors) coordinators and 2,200 Amil representatives throughout Ramadan this year,” he said at the Declaration of Zakat Fitrah Rates, here on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Yahya disclosed that the total amount of zakat collection for the Sabah in 2023 was RM145,302,446.72 involving fitrah of RM11,251,061.26 and properties of RM134,051,385.46.

“The number of zakat fitrah payers for the same year was 1,607,201 people, an increase of 46,587 payers or 2.99 per cent compared to 1,560,614 people in 2022,” he said.

In the same development, Yahya said the Muis Zakat and Fitrah Division managed to distribute RM140,953,600.96 to a total of 110,459 asnaf (needy) people last year.

He said while the surplus that was not distributed at the end of last year began distribution at the beginning of this year.

“During this year’s Ramadan, the Muis Zakat and Fitrah Division has allocated RM19.6 million to be distributed to four asnaf groups.

“RM18.1 million will be distributed to 12,409 hardcore poor, 31,268 poor and 3,402 poor converts, while RM1.5 million will be distributed to 2,200 Amil representatives as wages on duty,” he said.

Yahya said Muis this year aims to collect zakat and fitrah amounting to RM156,725,000 where zakat fitrah collection is expected to amount to RM11,725,000 while property zakat collection is expected to amount to RM145 million.

Earlier, the presentation of the Outstanding Amil Representative Coordinator award was also held at the event to recognise the efficient efforts of amil officers throughout Ramadan last year.

Also present were Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Ruslan Muharam; Muis Deputy President, Datuk Malai Ali Malai Ahmad and Sabah Islamic Organisation (Usia) President, Datuk Sapawi Ahmad.
