Why was tourism chief removed, group asks Tiong
Ammar Abd Ghapar confirmed in a news report that he had received a letter from the minister, Tiong King Sing, removing him from office on Monday.
PETALING JAYA: Tourism, arts and culture minister Tiong King Sing has been urged to be transparent and explain the rationale behind the removal of Tourism Malaysia director-general Ammar Abd Ghapar.

An industry grouping, the Malaysian Tourism Federation (MTF), said news of Ammar’s removal was disheartening for industry players, especially when it is recovering from the impact of Covid-19.

MTF secretary-general Sri Ganesh Michiel said it was important that Tourism Malaysia be led by a seasoned veteran with strong and stable managerial qualities.

Ganesh said the ministry’s sudden decision to remove the “highly experienced” Ammar, with 36 years of public service, had left tourism organisations puzzled.

“We ask Tiong and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to offer a detailed explanation for this. Let’s work together to promote transparency and resolve any stakeholder concerns,” Ganesh said.

Earlier today, Ammar confirmed his removal from the post, stating that he had received a letter from Tiong this morning, Malay Mail Online reported.

He said the letter stated that his removal is effective on Feb 26 (Monday), but it did not state his next position.

“I have no intention of going against any directive or instructions given to me … but I feel very frustrated and sad. I think that after serving for 36 years, I should not be treated this way,” he said.

FMT has sought comment from Tiong.
