“A total of 34 people have been placed in temporary flood relief shelters, while the rest opted to stay with their relatives,” said Awang.
KUNAK: A total of 32 flood victims from Kg Airport Batu 10 are being sheltered at the village hall which has been turned into a temporary relief centre following Tuesday’s flash floods.

Kunak District Officer Awang Mohd Yusof said a total of 13 houses were affected by the flash floods.

Those impacted involved 62 flood victims from 11 households.

“A total of 34 people have been placed in temporary flood relief shelters, while the rest opted to stay with their relatives,” said Awang.

The 34 comprised five men, 15 women, seven boys, six girls and a baby boy.

He said the flood victims would be allowed to return to their houses once the water has receded to minimise further danger.

Also there to assist were the police, Fire and Rescue Department, Rela, Health Ministry, Civil Defence Force, Water Department, Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd and Kunak District Council.

Since Tuesday, some low-lying areas in the village, particularly those near the river, have been swamped as a result of the Kalumpang River overflow.

Meanwhile Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (PHRS) extended donations to the flood victims.

Its Vice President Datuk Supardianshah Suyuti hoped the donations could ease their burden.

The retired serviceman, who is also the Chairman of the Kunak District Farmers Association (Kunak PPK), said the donations included food, bottled water and cash, which were delivered to all affected family heads.

On Tuesday, Kunak Assemblywoman Datuk Norazlinah Arif went out to the field to assess the situation, as well as distribute necessities and food to the flood victims.

Tuesday’s flood is believed to be the second worst to impact low-lying areas of the community near the river.

In October 2022, flash floods reached the roofs of some of the area’s homes, affecting more than 60 individuals.
