Kota Kinabalu: The inaugural Mount Trusmadi International Climbathon (MTIC) scheduled to be held in Tambunan on May 25 is set to play an important role in promoting eco-tourism in the district.

The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Christina Liew, represented by the ministry’s deputy permanent secretary II Alesia Sion, said this in her speech at the launch of the event at the Pusat Sejadi Hutan Lipur Kawang on Tuesday.

“The Climbathon not only challenges the physical limits of the participants but it also serves as a catalyst for the promotion of eco-tourism in Tambunan.

“It is important to recognise the outcomes and benefits of this event as it promises to leave a lasting impact on Tambunan and its surrounding areas.

“First and foremost, it will serve as a powerful promotional platform for Mt. Trusmadi locally and internationally. The anticipated influx of visitors will be contributing to the economic growth of Tambunan.

“Moreover, the event aligns perfectly with Tambunan’s vision of becoming the “Switzerland of the East.”

“By showcasing its natural beauty and cultural richness on a global stage, the Climbathon will promote Tambunan as a premier destination for travellers seeking adventure, tranquillity, and authentic experience and it may also attract investors, researchers, and conservationists, who share the commitment in preserving Tambunan’s natural heritage for future generations,” she said.
