Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s KK Chin was given the task to conduct a soft tennis clinic to 67 teachers and staff from Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Raya Melewar in Negeri Sembilan recently.

The event organised by Malaysia Soft Tennis Association (MSTA) in cooperation with the institute  was followed by a soft tennis tournament for the participants.

Chin said the main purpose of the clinic was to teach the basics of soft tennis to the teachers and was pleased with the positive response.

The institute’s director Mohamad Zaidi Ishak expressed his gratitude to MSTA for initiating the clinic at the institute and also thanked MSTA president Dato Shamshuzaman Sulaiman for sponsoring 45 soft tennis rackets and balls.

He hopes the teachers will utilise the four tennis courts during leisure time to practice what they have learned and introduce the sport to the students at schools that they will be posted to once they have graduated.

Meanwhile, Shamshuzaman said they are planning to organise soft tennis coaching course and umpires’ course in May this year.

As the sport is new in the country, their aim is to have at least six states with a soft tennis association to follow the footsteps of Sabah soft tennis association (SSTA) which was the first state to set up six  years ago.

He also said there are many international events to be held this year such as SEA Games, Asian Games, World Soft Tennis Championship and The World Junior age groups Championship.

Chin, who is also the secretary general for South East Asia Soft Tennis Federation (SEASTF), added that the national body will be organising the men and women single championship together with the juniors age groups championship in April at Kelana Jaya to select players to participate in the 17th World Soft Tennis Championship in Anseong, South Korea from September 1-11 and the World Junior Championship sometime in November.
