Rural train service grinds to a halt after landslide
Kota Kinabalu: A landslide has forced the suspension of some train services in Sabah’s interior.

Train services between the Beaufort and Rayoh stations in the neighbouring Tenom interior district were temporarily halted after an initial assessment showed that the track was unsafe for use following the landslip yesterday.

The Sabah State Railway Department said the landslip on the Sungai Padas riverbank has affected the railroad at KM102.9.

This occurred due to soil erosion found directly beneath the track, it added in a notice posted on its official social media page.

The department said the train service is still available.

“However, (it is) only up to KM102.8 until repair work is completed. It is difficult to properly assess the erosion level on the riverside.

There is a probability that a bigger erosion has occurred.

To ensure the safety of passengers, the stretch of the track is closed until it is safe to be used,” it added.

The department provides four trips between the Beaufort and Rayoh stations daily at 6am, 9am, 1.30pm and 4.30pm.

The said train service is the main mode of transportation for residents in these areas on a daily basis, including for students to go to school and return.
