PETALING JAYA: The opposition will not agree to test Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s majority in Parliament because this would expose Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) insufficient numbers, says Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi.

Puad said the opposition only intended to provoke and weaken the government as its support numbers continued to decline.

“That’s why PN did not dare ask for a bloc vote when Budget 2024 was approved. They are ‘more talk than action’,” he said in a Facebook post.

This followed Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor’s claim on Sunday that the opposition had enough statutory declarations from MPs to topple the unity government.

The day before, however, a Bersatu MP backing Anwar insisted that up to eight opposition MPs would announce their support for Anwar soon, despite rumours about a planned coup through the “Dubai Move”.

Bukit Gantang MP Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul, who announced his support for Anwar in November last year, claimed that these opposition MPs were waiting for the Dewan Rakyat to resume its meeting next month before declaring that they would back Anwar.

Speculation over the “Dubai Move” arose following alleged discussions between opposition leaders and certain government representatives during a recent visit to the United Arab Emirates.

The meeting allegedly aimed to divide tasks among “agents” to identify MPs who could switch support to the opposition to form a new government.

Earlier today, lawyers Bastian Pius Vendargon and Edmund Bon agreed that a “floor test” would be the best option to determine whether the head of government retains the confidence of a majority of the elected representatives.
