SHAH ALAM: Malaysians can renew their driver’s licence and road tax online via the MyJPJ application from Feb 1.

Transport minister Loke Siew Fook said the new function will save the public time and costs, as well as reduce waiting times at road transport department (JPJ) counters.

He added that the facility to renew driver’s licence and road tax via the app would be enabled for Malaysians only, initially.

“To encourage the use of online renewals, the government will provide a RM5 rebate to anyone renewing their driving licence digitally,” he said.

The rebate expires on Dec 31, 2024.

Since last February, Malaysians have been able to download a digital version of their driving licence via the MyJPJ app. However, the government has not done away entirely with physical copies for those who still seek to have one.

Private vehicles owned by Malaysians also no longer have to display the motor vehicle licence, commonly referred to as the road tax disc, as part of the transport ministry’s efforts to digitise JPJ’s services.

Speaking at a press conference at the Selangor JPJ headquarters here, Loke said that starting today, the public can share their digital road tax with family members, friends or other individuals authorised by the vehicle owner through the new “Kongsi LKM” function on the MyJPJ app.

“Vehicle owners only need to click on the vehicle’s licence plate number and then click the ‘Kongsi LKM’ button to share their digital road tax with the authorised individual.

“For example, say a man intends to use his father’s vehicle for a week. The father needs to first share the digital road tax with his son through the ‘Kongsi LKM’ function on the MyJPJ app,” he said, adding that a sharing time limit can also be set by the vehicle owner.

Loke said the app will send an activation code that needs to be entered by the recipient of the digital road tax to activate the sharing.

According to Loke, for security purposes, the MyJPJ app will delete any sharing records if they are not activated within 24 hours.
