Over 1,000 Sabah online scam victims this year
“These scammers do not choose their victims, some are high-ranking and some are low-ranking. They all become victims and the total loss reaches tens of millions of ringgit,” Jauteh said.
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah police recorded more than 1,000 online scam victims from January to November this year and the number is increasing every year, said Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun.

He said this during a town hall session by the Sabah Police Contingent Prevention and Community Security Department to raise awareness among the community on drug abuse and scammers at Dewan Sri Putatan, here, Thursday.

“We hope town halls like this will provide knowledge and information to the community so that they are always ready and aware of untraceable calls or unidentified callers.

“The most important thing for the community is to be prepared to face the consequences of the use of increasingly sophisticated technology which is manipulated by many for personal interests.

“These scammers do not choose their victims, some are high-ranking and some are low-ranking. They all become victims and the total loss reaches tens of millions of ringgit,” he said.

Also present were Deputy Chief Minister III and Public Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansur.

Shahelmey hoped the session would create awareness and understanding among the attendees and those who followed the live stream.

“Let us all carry out our responsibilities and duties to fight drug abuse,” he said.

On scammers, he said the public should not be easily deceived by persuasion tactics as they have become increasingly creative with sophistication of today’s digital technology.

“The Government always cooperates with relevant departments to ensure that the activities of these scammers can be curbed,” he said.

Shahelmey also launched a Road Safety Campaign in conjunction with the year-end holidays.

“The Sabah police road safety campaign is effective because it facilitates two-way communication between the Government and the community,” he added.
