Kota Kinabalu archers set new Saga medal record
Kota Kinabalu: The Kota Kinabalu archery team have surpassed their previous Sabah Games (Saga) medal counts with seven golds, two silvers and seven bronzes to top the medal tally in the just concluded biennial Games.

There were 17 districts taking part in the five-day competition and finishing in a distant second place was Tawau with one gold, three silvers and one bronze followed by Lahad Datu in third, with one gold and one silver.

At the previous meet held in Keningau back in 2019, Kota Kinabalu only managed to win three golds, two silvers and one bronze.

Kota Kinabalu District Archery Association president Datuk Ram Singh was delighted with the much improved performance from the archers.

“I am delighted with the overall results  and hope all of them will be called up to represent the state at the Sukma 2024 in Sarawak.

“I will also instruct my committee to draw up training programs to further improve their  skills and endurance in preparation for the tournament.

“At the last Sukma in 2022, the state only managed to win one gold and two bronze, so I believe there is a need to bring back our past glory when we managed to win six gold medals in 2016,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

He thanked the  management committee led by the association’s  secretary general Shiu Vay Leung and all those involved including the advisors, coaches and parents to ensure the success of the team.

He hopes they will remain committed as a unit to guide the archers at least until the Malaysia Games  next year.

Meanwhile,  he also expressed his gratitude to DBKK for their assistance and financial support and also to Sabah State Archery Association for the well organised tournament at the Ranau Sports Complex.
