Kota Kinabalu: The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac), in partnership with the Sarawak Government and the Bintulu Divisional Administration Office, will host a three-day Motac @ Bintulu Programme from Dec 29 - 31 at Lapang Lasar Kenyalang (Old Airport Site) in Bintulu, Sarawak.

Bintulu was chosen as one of the areas for promoting art and culture at the grassroots level due to its unique attractiveness to attract tourists. As of October this year, some 3.187 million of domestic and international visitors went to Sarawak.

Bintulu’s uniqueness is also one of Sarawak’s tourism destinations to meet the aim of 35.6 million international tourist arrivals and RM147.1 billion in tourism income in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

Tanjung Kidurong Beach, Lambir Hills National Park, Monument Council of State, Bintulu Esplanade, Similajau National Park, Tumbina Park, Temasya Beach Tanjung Batu, and paragliding activities are among the interesting attractions in Bintulu.

The authenticity and culture of Sarawak’s longhouse community are also major draws for domestic and international tourists.

The originality of the architecture and structure of traditional longhouses that are still relevant to be preserved has become the key attraction for tourists to visit and stay in longhouses, particularly in the homestay programme.

The major goal of the Motac @ Bintulu Programme is to give the community the chance and place to generate revenue through business, selling handicraft products, and performing arts.

The initiative also allows locals, as well as domestic and international visitors, to learn about and enjoy Malaysia’s beauty and distinctiveness through art, culture, and heritage activities, particularly those involving the Bintulu community.

In addition, Motac @ Bintulu is organising the “Kraf Borneo Kita” Festival, which will run until January 7 and will include 75 local craft entrepreneurs from Sarawak, Sabah, and Peninsular Malaysia selling textiles, forest products, soil products, metal products, and diverse crafts.

“Kraf Borneo Kita” with the theme of “This is Malaysia’s Culture” will highlight the beauty of Malaysian art and culture through activities such as handicrafts, arts, and Malaysian heritage that can be shared cross-culturally throughout states.

There will be 100 vendors selling food and beverages, as well as stage performances featuring a variety of exciting activities such as dance performances, singing, and performances by buskers and local bands.

The Opening Ceremony, which will be officiated by Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Sri Tiong King Sing on December 31 at 8pm, will be the highlight. The New Year 2024 countdown celebration will include fireworks and folk performances.

The public is invited to join the programme on Dec 29 - 31, from 10am to 10.30pm, at Lapang Lasar Kenyalang (Old Airport Site), Bintulu, Sarawak.
