SANDAKAN: Tanjong Papat Assemblyman, Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung, hoped that more non-governmental organisations and employers would continue to help in the rehabilitation of prison inmates.

He urged companies to continue providing job opportunities as former prison inmates have acquired relevant skills while institutionalised.

“When they return to society, there is no doubt that these skills can help them, especially in finding a job.”

He said this at a media conference immediately after officiating the Sandakan Jalinan Kasih 2023 Programme in conjunction with Christmas Day celebration at the Sandakan Prison Mess Hall.

Also present were the Director of Sabah State Prison and the Federal Territory of Labuan, Nora Musa, Director of Sandakan Prison Ab Nasif Sarahan, his Deputy, Fredie Cassidy Anak Maleng, Executive Director of Prison Fellowship Malaysia (Sabah), Jeevanand Prem Kumar and his entourage, Pastor Edmond Edward Kumar who delivered the Christmas message to the parents and families of the residents.

Frankie said it is not easy to implement such programmes which showcases togetherness in celebrating various festivals in this country.

He said this is due to the cooperation between the Sandakan Prison management and the Malaysian Prison Fellowship Association (Sabah) which has always provided solid support in the rehabilitation process of the inmates. Frankie said this is also due to the continuous support from the family and community.

“But the rehabilitation process itself is not solely the responsibility of the Prison Department. In fact, the involvement of all levels of society in general is helpful and can have a positive effect on the rehabilitation process as these people will eventually return to the community after completing their sentence,” he added.

Meanwhile, Nora said in line with the department's objectives, the programme also ensures that rehabilitation can be effectively implemented for all residents.

“The prison institution also wants to instil humanity, love and a sense of responsibility and harmony.

“It is clear that this also requires the cooperation of all quarters for the effort to be achieved,” she said.

Regarding the plans of the Sabah and Labuan Prison Department, she explained, more closed-circuit camera installations in certain block areas will be installed in the prisons, including Sandakan, in addition to other improvements including toilets, quarters and a new electronic system.
