KOTA KINABALU: The anticipation is building and excitement palpable as the Gold Cup is finally here, Sunday (today).
Borneo’s premier gallopers (Class A) will square off with one another on turf track over 1800 metres for racing’s highest honour.

Royal Sabah Turf Club’s Gold Cup is without doubt the grandest race in the State.
Inaugurated in 1972, the Cup was first presented by the Head of State, Tun Pengiran Ahmad Raffae.
The racing thrills, romance and aura of the Gold Cup have since continued to present day. As equestrian enthusiasts and fans from all corners of Borneo prepare for today’s showdown, here is the take on some of the horses set to grace the Tambalang racetrack.
Brilliant One:

An energetic horse known for his fight back spirit especially when engaged by other horses. He comes to the race well-prepared, fit and sharp. When on song, not many can come close.
Blarney Blink:

A stallion reputed for his electrifying pace, Blarney Blink is the fan’s favourite. With an outstanding track record of victories this season, and the highest rating of the bunch, he is expected to jump well and then go full throttle.
Zack:
Another superstar demanding respect. With his agility and discipline displayed in recent races, he is a force to be reckoned with.
Pop:
Pop is celebrated for his dogged determination. His renowned endurance and stamina elevate him to be amongst the favourites.
Super Come:
Rising fast up the ranks, Super Come is well known in the Tambalang circuit for his breath-taking velocity and agility. He could spoil the party of experienced elites.
The other contenders include Keepitup, Smart Vintage, Classic Head, Messi and Honey Star, are not to be dismissed lightly.
With the right racing strategy, opportunity window, and timing over a very punishing 1800 metre journey, some may break through and snatch the title; adding yet another fascinating chapter to the storied history of the Gold Cup.
