Kota Kinabalu: The 30th Borneo Safari International Off-Road Challenge scheduled to start later this month has been given full support by the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

During a courtesy call by event organiser, Sabah Four Wheel Drive Association (SFWDA) at the department’s headquarters here in Bundusan on Wednesday, JPJ Sabah Engineer, Ts Mahamad Rashid Ibrahim gave his green light on behalf of the department.

“Borneo Safari has been ongoing for 30 years and has consistently proved itself as one of the biggest off-road expeditions not only in Malaysia but also around South East Asia.

“JPJ Sabah is honoured to be onboard and cooperate together with SFWDA in this expedition as per usual we do not have any objections with the participants’ vehicles as the modifications done are used during the expedition’s period only,” he said.

He also revealed that some JPJ officers will be taking part in the expedition to obtain knowledge regarding off-road vehicle modifications to improve on the current legal modifications guideline.

“I would like to advise the public on behalf of the director  to not modify their vehicles using the Borneo Safari participants’ vehicles as example because the modifications are only allowed for the expedition.

“I also hope SFWDA will continue giving their cooperation by ensuring the convoy’s safety and obey traffic regulations throughout the entire journey.”

Meanwhile, SFWDA President cum event director Faez Nordin thanked JPJ Sabah for continuously giving their full support and trust to the expedition.

The Borneo Safari this year with some 400 vehicles and 1,200 participants is set to flag off on October 30 at the Sabah Tourism Board headquarters in Gaya Street.
