PETALING JAYA: An Indonesian immigrant leapt down a four-storey shophouse at Kompleks Hentian Kajang in a bid to escape immigration authorities last night.

The 27-year-old man landed on a roof on the second storey and broke his right leg before he fell to the ground floor.

Despite his broken leg, he tried to escape into nearby bushes but was detained by immigration officers.

The Indonesian, who works as a contractor, said he entered Malaysia three years ago, but his passport had expired in December.

Immigration chief Khairul Dzaimee Daud said his officers checked 425 people there.

Of the 425, the officers arrested 175 foreigners, aged between two and 55, during the raid. They were composed of 132 men, 41 women and two children.

“We arrested 115 Myanmar nationals, 33 Indonesians, 13 Bangladeshis, nine Nepalis, four Sri Lankans and one Indian national,” Harian Metro quoted him as saying.

Khairul said the immigration department had been observing Kompleks Hentian Kajang for some time after a number of foreigners were spotted there.

He said some of them were asylum seekers from the Shan ethnic group in Myanmar holding documents from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and with family members staying here.

During the operation, he said, the team found that some of the immigrants had fake work documents. UNHCR cardholders from Rakhine were also found to have brought in undocumented foreigners to stay with them.

Most of the undocumented immigrants were believed to have entered the country through Johor’s waters.

Those arrested will be brought to the Semenyih detention centre for further investigation.
