Hurting wife: Man charged

Kota Kinabalu: A 37-year-old mechanic was charged at the Magistrate’s Court here, Tuesday, with assaulting his wife.Lee Nyen On pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun to causing hurt to his 33-year-old wife at 4pm on June 22 this year at Kg Madsiang, Penampang.ADVERTISEMENT
The charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code was read together with Section 326A of the same Code.
Section 323 carries a jail term of up to one year or a fine of up to RM2,000 or both on conviction while Section 326A states that whoever causes hurt to his spouse or former spouse, a child, a disabled adult, or other family members and commits an offence under Section 323, 324, 325, 326, 334 or 335 shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of twice as long as the maximum term for which he would be liable to on conviction for that offence.
Counsel Mohamad Syazwan Shah Mohamad Ali representing Lee applied for a lower bail amount on the grounds that he is married with two children and taking care of his ageing mother.

In another case, a woman was fined RM1,000 or one month jail for engaging in online gambling with a handphone.
Mardiana Abdullah, 21, pleaded guilty to committing the offence at 5pm next to a shop at Jalan Berjaya 3, here on March 6 this year. She was charged under Section 7(2) of the same Act which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to six months’ jail or both on conviction.

Meanwhile, three people were penalised for taking syabu.
Muklis Mohamad, Edixtor Gabril and Azmir Jamain admitted separately to committing the offence between March 26 and April 11 this year. Muklis was ordered to pay a fine of RM2,000 or six months’ jail.
Edixtor and Azmir were handed seven months’ jail each from the date of their arrest.
Taking drugs under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years’ jail on conviction.
