PETALING JAYA: Attorney-General (AG) Idrus Harun has confirmed that fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low, had made attempts to settle the charges against him.

He said all offers for a settlement were rejected by the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).

“We confirm that Jho Low, through his representatives, made attempts to engage with the government for a settlement this year,” Idrus said in a statement.

He said that in these attempts, Jho Low’s representatives met with government agencies, including the AGC. The AG, however, did not mention the quantum offered by the businessman for the settlement.

Earlier today, it was reported that Jho Low had offered the government RM1.5 billion to settle the charges against him.

The proposal was negotiated with Putrajaya by former attorney-general Apandi Ali, who represented Jho Low in the negotiations, according to The Edge business newspaper, quoting sources.

Apandi was appointed attorney-general in 2015 under Najib Razak’s tenure as prime minister before his service was terminated in June 2018 following the change in the federal government, with Pakatan Harapan coming to power.

Apandi sued Putrajaya for RM2.23 million over this termination. A settlement was reached in April.

Jho Low, a Penang-born businessman, has been on the run since the change of government in 2018 and Interpol has issued red notices for his arrest.

The government has said his whereabouts are not known.

He was also said to have been a close confidant of former prime minister Najib, who has been convicted and is on trial on charges relating to funds linked to 1MDB.
