BEAUFORT: Several schools were closed due to flooding in Lumadan and Klias’ low-lying areas.  Among the schools closed were SK Lago, SK Suasa, SK Mempagar, SJK (C) Lian Hwa, Tadika Kemas Pintas, Limbawang State Religious School, Kafa Kg Lago, Kafa Kg Suasa, Kafa Kg Bekalau, Kafa Kg Luagan, Kafa Kg Kuala Balik and SMK St Paul’s.

It is reported that the majority of students who sit for the SPM examination at SMK Gadong are from Kg Susasa. The Flood Natural Disaster Committee has received complaints from Form Five students, particularly from Kg Suasa and Kg Lago, who have asked to be transported to SMK Gadong to take the exam. Meanwhile, District Fire and Rescue Chief Mohammad Hasbullah Nenggok stated that the rescue team’s machinery was used to transport three men, nine women, six boys, seven girls and a baby to a safe location. He stated that a total of 26 flood victims had been evacuated since the floods struck on Monday afternoon that lasted till Tuesday, and that they were being housed at the Dewan Datuk Seri Panglima Mohd Dun Temporary Evacuation Centre. “With rain falling in Tenom, waters in all of the low-lying areas around the town and nearby villages in the district have risen to a dangerous level of 8.88 metres.

“As of 10am on Tuesday, the water level in Beaufort is 8.88 metres, which is below the danger level; therefore, people staying in low-lying areas are asked to be more prepared,” he said, adding that 45 villages in Klias and Lumadan have been flooded so far.

Meanwhile, students attending the first day of school here were found to have complied with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) which have been outlined by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) and the National Security Council (MKN), said Champin Piuh District Police Chief on Tuesday.

He said among the schools visited by the police were SK Banting Sindumin, SK Melamam Sindumin, SK Mesapol, SRJK (C) Sin Boon Sindumin, SK Pelakat, SK Lubok Darat, SK Pantai and SRJK (C) Chung Hwa Mesapol.

“The patrols and visits are in conjunction with the “1st Day At School Programme” in all primary schools to ensure that schools comply with the SOPs set to prevent infection and spread of Covid-19 virus.

“Besides that, it is also to ensure that there are no criminal cases, especially cases of bullying in schools.” Champin said the preparation of temperature check desks and student attendance notebooks were also provided according to the SOP and the physical spacing in the classroom was also according to the SOP.

“The police also found that all students wore face masks when in school and in class. We would like to thank all the schools, teachers and students for complying with this SOP for their health and safety,” he said.
