Rundum among new tourism spots in interior
KEMABONG: Tourism sector in the interior especially within Tenom and Kemabong is gaining attention with several new tourism centres, said Rundum Highland Manager Rusli Tampisan.

Rusli said, Rundum Highland has a panoramic view of the tropical forest with temperature of 16 degrees Celsius, similar to Kundasang located on the outskirts of Mount Kinabalu, adding that it is capable of attracting many tourists.

Rundum Highland is 30 kilometres from the Pekan Kecil Kemabong and takes about an hour along a hilly stretch, though rather boring but visitors will be entertained if they can watch the lifestyle of the Murut Tagol community who live along the way to Rundum Highland.

“The Murut Taghol are friendly and welcoming… you may be stunned to see their lifestyle but it gives much satisfaction because much of their livelihood depend heavily on farming and hunting one time ago,” he said.

He said it was no wonder why Datuk Seri Panglima Antanom rose against the British government in the 1915, adding that visitors will find the answer themselves just by looking at the livelihood of the Murut community that depend on agriculture but are imposed taxes by the British in those days.

Rusli pointed out that the idea of developing Rundum Highland came from Kemabong Assemblyman Jamawi Jaafar who sparked many ideas not only in terms of tourism but also developing the economy based on agriculture.

Meanwhile, Jamawi when contacted, said the village area in Rundum Highland and along the stretch has been cultivated with various vegetation such as asparagus, tomato and pepper, among others, adding that the community received help from the Department of Agriculture.

He also said that there are currently three imported horses with a height of six feet, is tame and easy to control, specifically provided to attract the public especially tourists to Rundum Highland.

He said the operation started early this year and besides providing the horses, tourists who are keen on riding the horses will be assisted by experienced jockeys.

“With this attraction, I am sure Rundum Highland will be an attractive tourists destination, and this will indirectly boost the people’s economy in the area,” he said. - Mail Mathew
