Tawau BEBC committed to transform Tawau into tourism hub
Tawau: The BIMP-EAGA BEBC of Tawau is committed to exploiting the geographical position of the district to transform Tawau into a great tourism hub and make the district the "East Borneo Special Economic Corridor"."The realisation of the East Borneo Special Economic Corridor will see Tawau linking to the 'Great Sulu-Sulawesi Economic Corridors', East Kalimantan, other BIMO-EAGA Areas and beyond with the collaborations of BIMO-EAGA development partners, China, Asian Secretariat, Asian Development Bank, and North Territory of Australia," Tawau BEBC Chairman Wong Thart Sin said.

Disclosing this at the BEBC Tawau Councillors Installation Night recently, he said the BIMO-EAGA Business Council is a government driven council and accredited facilitator for BIMO-EAGA Governments and private sectors with a 'fifth' country status in BIMO-EAGA platform.

Presently, Wong said the Tawau BEBC has a pool of highly talented councillors in various fields and age groups to lead all its eight clusters and 18 working groups to bring Tawau into a business sustainable and economic vibrant place to live in.

"A proposal will be given to Agriculture Minister Datuk Junz Wong to adopt commercialise multi-crops system to defeat the norm of mono-crop system in agriculture and commercial aquaculture farming.

For the blue print of Sabah Government for Tawau," he said.

Meanwhile, Tawau Chinese Chamber of Commerce Vice-president Madam Low Foong Meng said the establishment of BEBC (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines) BIMP-EAGA (East Asean Growth Area) Tawau Council would promote the development of Tawau's economy and narrow the imbalance gap between the neighboring countries.

"As long as there is a solid development project for Tawau, we, as Tawau Chinese Chamber of Commerce will be willing to cooperate and participate in it," she said.

In addition, the opening up of the four Asean countries (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Philippines) in future, will help to upgrade Tawau as a business hub of East Kalimantan; it means Tawau will have unpredictable development potential and opportunities.

Therefore, Low urged all Tawau merchants to get well-prepared for the future business developments which across regions and the borders. - Christy Chok, Nikko Fabian
