Govt unfair to the women in Tawau
Tawau: The government should consider placing at least one mammography machine and radiotherapy machine in Tawau General Hospital so that women in Tawau no longer need to fly elsewhere for treatment.Kinabalu Pink Ribbon Chairlady Christy FE Salazar (pic), a breast cancer survivor for 11 years, said this would ease the hardship of patients here both financially and in terms of time. Both Sandakan and the state capital have such equipment.

She said she had raised this matter many times but there has been no action until today.

"Having a mammography machine is very important and all women, regardless of age must go for mammography screening test for early detention.

"All women must love their own selves. It is nothing to be scared of or to be ashamed. They must possess high awareness and have regular check-up.

"At the same time, they also have their right to ask for female doctor, instead of male," she said.

According to her, cancer is very common especially breast cancer in females and males regardless of age, race and religion.

The patients would not feel the pain of breast cancer until the virus spreads into their bones. Thus, early detention must come with accurate medication for diagnosis early.

Christy said most breast cancer patients are Chinese and Malay while less among Indians likely due to the diet of cinnamon and spices among the latter.

Kinabalu Pink Ribbon was launched in Kota Kinabalu by a small group of breast cancer survivors in 2011 and expanded to Tawau in October 2013.

October is the month for breast cancer awareness, so-called "Pink-October". - Christy Chok
