Asean must ensure Myanmar restore Rohingya rights: NGO
Kuala Lumpur: Centre for Human Rights Research and Advocacy (Centhra) urged Asean leaders to take all measures to ensure Myanmar restores the rights of the Rohingya community in that country. Its chief executive, Azril Mohd Amin said measures could be taken such as mediation, early warning mechanisms and economic sanctions to prevent human rights violations and to protect civilians from their occurrence.

"Centhra urges Asean members to immediately activate the Responsibility to Protect (R2P), a global political commitment made at the 2005 World Summit and to apply the same against Myanmar to cajole its regime into restoring the basic rights and dignity of the Rohingya community.

"Such actions could, and surely must also include appropriate political, economic and military sanctions against Myanmar, including use of economic and military force against the regime pursuant to Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter should the regime continue to disregard the will of the international community as regards the safety and well-being of the Rohingya, " he said in a statement.

The principle of R2P is based on the underlying premise that all nations possess a fundamental obligation to protect all populations from mass atrocities.

Azril said Centhra also urged Asean leaders, gathering in Singapore for their 33rd Summit this week, to immediately and jointly apply the needful political and social pressure backed by their formidable economic clout to force the Myanmar regime to hold those who have committed grave crimes against the Rohingya accountable.

"This as well as resolving the causes of displacement and ongoing genocide of Rohingya Muslims and also the Kachin Christians, another minority group in Myanmar," he said.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said on Tuesday that Myanmar's de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi was trying to "defend the indefensible" over alleged atrocities committed by the country's military against the minority Rohingya Muslims. – Bernama
