10 to vie for Sugandoi title at KDCA tomorrow

Penampang: The competition for the State-level Sugandoi Kaamatan is getting stiffer as 10 of the 45 participants step into the final stage at the Hongkod Koisaan Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) hall, here, tomorrow (Saturday).The 10 finalists selected during the competition's semi-final, Wednesday night, were Michelle Michael who is representing DBKK, Terence Asangki (Likas), Gretchene Quirina Salipa (Inanam), Mackdowell Lester Maris (Kapayan), Fransisca Juingki (Klang Valley), Zurina Tongkooh (Labuan), Evana Hera Balinti (Ranau), Melinda Painol (Kota Belud), Terence Woritus (Penampang) and Zarinie Shakira Zainal (Libaran).

They had to face a closely-fought contest in a two-day selections stages – quarter and semi-finals, on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively, before earning a place in the finals.

In the final stage, each contestant will perform two songs.

Michelle will perform Ralan Koposion and Igitanku Longon Nu, Terence Asangki (Tongkiad Noh Mantad Doho and Kakal Ponggirot), Gretchene (Nosindualanku and Onuai Oku Timpu), Mackdowell (Kakal Kosorou Diya and Minogiyang Ko Pomuandaman Ku), Fransisca (Kakal Poinggirot and Poingompiku), Zurina (Kiva Koupusan Nu and Visak Piupusan), Evana (Pitongkizadan and Igitan Ku Gisom Kapatayon), Melinda (Pitongkizadan and Oulau), Terence Woritus (Haro Piombolutan Haro Pitongkiadan and Langad Ku), Zarinie (Hangad Ku Tomoimo and Puun Pitongkizadan).

The champion for the State Sugandoi Kaamatan will receive RM6,000 while the second and third place winners will bring home RM4,000 and RM3,000, respectively.

The other seven finalists will not go home empty-handed as they will receive RM1,000 each.

Apart from Sugandoi Kaamatan, two other categories – Sugandoi Songkotoun and Sugandoi Dazanak will also hold their finals tomorrow prior to the finals of the Sugandoi Kaamatan.

Five Sugandoi Songkotoun contestants and seven Sugandoi Dazanak contestants will compete at the final stage.

Sugandoi Kaamatan is opened to contestants aged from 18-59, while Sugandoi Songkotoun is reserved for participants aged 60 and above. The third category, Sugandoi Dazanak is meant for young participants aged 12 and below.

The winner for Sugandoi Songkotoun will bring home RM3,000, while the champion for Sugandoi Dazanak will receive RM1,500.

The final competition is scheduled to start at 6pm and the public are welcomed to witness the crowning of new champions for each Sugandoi category. - Ricardo Unto
