Liew defends Shafie holding onto the Finance portfolio
Kota Kinabalu: Deputy Chief Minister-cum-State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Christina Liew (pic) has defended new Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal holding onto the Finance Minister portfolio. She said she was aware that Pakatan Harapan had, in their manifesto, stated that those holding the CM post should not be holding the Finance portfolio as well.

"Yes, we had a discussion. Our Chief Minister already said he is only holding the post for the time being until he cleared up things before delegating the post to someone else."

According to her, the State's financial position is also not as rosy as was told by the previous Chief Minister who claimed that we have so much reserve (RM4 billion) and all that.

"Apparently when he (Shafie) went to the Ministry of Finance and had a briefing, it wasn't as rosy as what was told. So he is quite concerned about it.

"But I have no doubt about the Chief Minister's ability to clear things out and then re-delegate this Finance Minister job to another person," she said.

The new government can be trusted to deliver what has been promised during their election campaign, she said.

"Sabah Government will deliver the promises made and watch out for the 100 days because we are going to fulfil all that had been promised," she said, during a Majlis Sungkai hosted by her Ministry at Promenade.

Liew also said they will be pushing for Pakatan Harapan Sabah's proposal to create the post of Deputy Prime Minister to represent Sabah and Sarawak.

"Sabah and Sarawak should have a second Deputy Prime Minister because Sabah and Sarawak are partners with Malaya, we should be equal, this is a target that us and Sarawak will be working on to achieve the target," she said.

"It is not a promise, it is something that we proposed to the headquarters that we want this, if we don't get it now, perhaps we can get it next time, but I am very glad that Sarawak is also pushing for it," she said.

It was reported that the call in Sarawak was made by DAP Socialist Youth Publicity Secretary Abdul Aziz Isa who wanted Sarawak Pakatan Harapan Chief to be appointed second Deputy Prime Minister.

His call however was played down by Sarawak DAP Vice President Leon Jimat Donald who was quoted as saying that it was a personal view of Abdul Aziz that did not reflect the stand of the party. - Sherell Jeffrey
