PI1M helps entrepreneurs grow business online

Putra Jaya: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), through the 1Malaysia Internet Centre (PI1M), has been cultivating entrepreneurial spirit in the community by capitalising on the Internet access facilities provided.Its Chairman, Tan Sri Dr Halim Shafie said PI1M has now shifted from it original goal of increasing Internet access in the rural areas when it was set up 10 years ago to providing various programmes in order to raise the socio-economic wellbeing of the people.

He said the country's broadband penetration rate reached 81.7 per cent as at the first quarter of this year as result of government policies implemented through the MCMC such as the National Broadband Initiative.

"With higher level of access now, the PI1M has shifted its focus to organising various programmes besides basic ICT (information and communication technology) skills to enhance the socio-economic wellbeing of the people," he said at the PI1M Best Entrepreneur Prize Presentation Ceremony here yesterday.

Halim said the programmes included ICT/ e-learning/ social media, entrepreneurship, coding/ robotic, creative multimedia, and life-long learning modules conducted at 840 PI1M centres throughout the country.

He said the MCMC would continue to collaborate with Majlis Amanah Rakyat by providing training channels for proper certifications such as the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Food Safety is the Responsibility of the Industry (MeSTI) Scheme undertaken by the Health Ministry, and Halal Certification by the Islamic Development Department (Jakim ) for entrepreneurs.

The inaugural PI1M Best Entrepreneur Competition was opened to PI1M members who have been in business for at least six months and have their own products.

Northern Region PI1M Entrepreneur winner Nur Isma Afifi Md Aris was adjudged Best PI1M National Entrepreneur, defeating five entrepreneurs who were winners in their respective zones.

A stingless bee honey and bee honey-based product producer, Nur Isma Afifi transformed her marketing operations to online after attending a training at the PI1M Belimbing Kanan, Padang, Terap, Kedah.

"Besides stingless bee honey, I also produce a number of stingless bee-based products, namely soap bars, night and day creams, bath gel, which have made inroads into Brunei, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand," she said. – Bernama
