Kota Kinabalu: The expansion of Malaysia Digital Economic Corporation's (MDEC) #Youcanduit initiative to Sabah is set to boost the number of digital-base entrepreneurs and workforce in Sabah. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman (pic) said the initiative that came along with e-Rezeki and e-Usahawan programme are in line with State Government's effort to create additional stream of income for Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students and those from the low-income bracket (B40).

e-Rezeki and the e-Usahawan are digital platforms set up by MDEC, an agency under the Communications and Multimedia Ministry, that aims to assist those from the low income bracket and TVET students, respectively.

The expansion of the programmes to the State are also viewed timely due to the State's 70 per cent broadband penetration and the large presence of 'digital natives'.

"The realities are today's generation are digital natives who depend so much on the ICT," said Musa, adding that this is why the State Government will continue to remain supportive of digital based skill enhancement and entrepreneurial programmes introduced by agencies from the Federal Government.

He noted the State itself has its own list of programmes such as e-desa, robo-neo, Sabah Screen Fest, Virtual Incubator Centre to boost the digital grip of the local entrepreneurs.

Musa said entrepreneurs in this globalised era need to be more creative to find new approach in doing business and the Government also realised that it is not an easy task to generate wealth among entrepreneurs.

Towards this end, he hoped the expansion of the #Youcanduit programme here would benefit the enterprising Sabahans to improve their business.

Musa's speech was read by Deputy Chief Minister cum Industrial Development Minister Datuk Seri Raymond Tan during the launching of the #Youcanduit programme, here, Saturday.

Also present at the event were Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said, MDEC Chairman Tan Sri Sidek Hassan and the Resource Development and Information Technology Minister Permanent Secretary Datuk Bruno Vun.

Earlier, Sidek Hassan said the organising of the event here is MDEC's fifth location to date after its first launching in Kuching, Sarawak in March by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Since the inception of #Youcanduit, MDEC has recorded an additional accumulated income of RM14 million via its e-Usahawan and RM18 million from e-Rezeki.

He said there have been already 20,000 students who took up various courses under e-Usahawan and another 20,000 individuals registered under e-Rezeki.

The introduction of the #Youcanduit programme was in line with the national agenda of the Federal Government to have the digital economy contribute 20 per cent of the country's Gross Domestic Product, he pointed out.
