Kota Kinabalu: Seri Insan Borneo School initiated a project to collect food items for the victims of the recent earthquake and mud floods in Kota Belud to educate their students on their social obligation to society. The project was carried out by its Student Parliament after the school's chairwoman, Datin Sharifah Habsah introduced the idea to the students.

They went on to collect dry food, boxes of bottled water, clothes, diapers, toys, canned food and so on over a week while some also donated money which the school used to buy other food items.

She said 12 students of the Student Parliament were also travelling with the contribution to the village to visit the disaster sites.

"So (this is) the Student Parliament project for their social obligation. So this is where I want the students to be aware, to learn, to be responsible to the society; the community (and) to contribute something.

"From here they learn, in fact from the kindergarten; the primary, all of them are giving, the parents; the students, even though small amounts but here they are learning (their) social obligation.

"So that's why I initiated all the students to do it. They led because they are the future leaders, we only monitored them (and) they were the ones who did (the) collecting and so on."

She said this after the handing over of contributions to United Pasok Momogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) Kota Belud Division Chief, Ewon Benedick at the school's compound, Friday.

The items collected were sent to Kota Belud with some former students of the school and parents of current students providing transport.

"We did not concentrate on mineral water only, we gave food because I think they need food," Sharifah said adding that the all the collected items would be donated to Kg Kiau.

Meanwhile, Benedict said the district has had problems with the power plant in its Water Department as it was not operational about three days before the village was hit by the mud flood.

"But we didn't publicise it (the water problems) because we took our own initiative within the Kota Belud district, we donated directly to the village."

However, he said after the disaster in Ranau, when many people were sending aids over to Ranau, some were also redirected to Kota Belud for which he expressed his deepest gratitude to the donors.

He said that the plant would probably be operational in a day or two, adding that anyone wanting to donate may contact the district office.
