Sabah has 39 PPR projects, the most, says Nga
Sandakan MP Vivian Wong had asked if the government intends to build more PPR units in her constituency, which has a large number of squatters.
PETALING JAYA: Sabah, which is one of the poorest states in the country, has the highest number of people’s housing projects (PPR), numbering 39 projects, in the country, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

The 39 projects comprise 26,299 units, of which 24,009 have been built, housing and local government minister Nga Kor Ming said.

Three projects consisting of 2,090 units are being constructed, and one project comprising 200 units is being planned.

Nga also said Sandakan has the most number of PPR units built with 6,080, or 7.8% of the projects nationwide.

“The ministry is open to suggestions for new PPR projects from the state government,” he said in a parliamentary reply.

He was responding to Vivian Wong (PH-Sandakan) who wanted to know if the ministry was planning to build more PPR projects in Sandakan in view of the huge number of squatters there.

In September last year, data from the Eastern Sabah Security Command showed that Sabah has 543 squatter settlements throughout the state and Labuan, with more than 140,000 illegal immigrants living in them.
