Soft tennis squad bag two golds
All the winners of the Malaysia Soft Tennis Championship with officials.
Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah soft tennis team returned with two gold, one silver and four bronze medals from the Malaysia (Closed) Soft Tennis Open and Juniors tournament held at the Kelana Jaya Sports Complex, Selangor recently.

The gold medals came from Leviance Chong in the women’s open after she won all her round robin group matches and nine-year-old Louis Ho, who defeated Kuala Lumpur’s Mohd Ariq 3-2 in the final to win the boys’ Under-12 title.

The only silver came from Sherbelle Chung Jia Wei in the girls’ Under-15 category while the bronze medals were delivered by Euodia Lai Hung Qing and Eloise Voo Yee Qian (women’s open), Jedidiah Kwan and Ethan Tay (men’s open), Jayden Jay Ng (boys’ Under-15) and Kovidh Sharma (boys’ Under-15).

The other winners were Pearjit Singh (Selangor) - men’s open gold, Maira Raihana  Moreez (Kuala Lumpur) - women’s open silver, Omar Redza Moreeza (Kuala Lumpur) - boys’ Under-15 gold,  Muhammad Adam Rifey Mohd (Kuala Lumpur) - boys’ Under-15 silver, Nurhafiya Auji Mohd Hafiz (Kuala Lumpur) - girls’ Under-15 gold, Mya Aleesya Mohd Ariff (Kuala Lumpur) - girls’ Under-15 bronze, Nurhadiya Areej Mohamad Hafiz (Kuala Lumpur) - girls’ Under-15 bronze, Mohd Fuad Mohd Fairul (Kuala Lumpur) - boys’ Under-12 bronze and Muhamad Harith Nazif Mohd (Kuala Lumpur) - boys’ Under-12 bronze.

A total of 40 players from Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Sabah took part in the tournament organised by Sabah Soft Tennis Association and sanctioned by Malaysia Soft Tennis Association (MSTA).

The main aim was to select players to represent Malaysia at the 17th World Soft Tennis Championship to be held in Anseong, South Korea from September 1-11 and the World Junior in China, in late October.

Pearljit Singh, Leviance Chong, Lam Bao Long, Maira Raihana Moreeza were selected for the World Championship in Korea, but Leviance had opted to skip the tournament and her place was taken by Euodia Lai.

Meanwhile Leviance, Eloise Voon Yee Qian, Jessica Chee Lee Chiew, Hans Ryan Chong Xing Er, Ethan Tay Ee Harn, Euodia Lai, Jedidiah Kwan Ming Zhe, Beverly Koh, Wee Sian Wei, Jayden Jay Ng from Sabah together with Muhammad Aliff  Muhammad Meirhan and Nabil Syazwan Mustaffa from IPG Seremban became the first batch of officials in the country to pass the Malaysia National Technical Course conducted by KK Chin from SSTA during the competition.

MSTA president Dato Shamzhusaman Sulaiman in his closing speech congratulated all the winners and also the 12 newly qualified officials and hoped they will be actively involved in soft tennis tournaments held in the country.

He also praised the organising committee and all those involved in ensuring the success of the tournament.
