SIPITANG: Esplanade food stall visitors here are worried about the growing presence of stray dogs.
Former Sindumin Community Development Leader (UPPM) Sani Miasin said the “dirty and disgusting” strays look for scraps near the stalls.

“When people are sitting around, these wild dogs are also there. This is very disgusting because while people are breathing fresh air, suddenly dogs appear near the stall.
“It is feared that this will affect business, especially for traders and food stall operators, not to mention food and drink restaurant operators around the town,” he said.
Stray dogs are also seen roaming near food stalls facing the Maybank in town.
“There are also many more of these wild dogs roaming near the sidewalks in town. Often time people will tend to avoid them out of fear of being bitten and infected with rabies.

“Most of the villages also have their own stray pack roaming here and there. There was even an incident where the strays tried to bite passers-by,” he said.
Sani said if left alone, it will become more of a threat to the residents, with nights filled with the sound of dogs fighting or howling.

He urged the District Council and Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) to take immediate action.
“We don’t want to kill them, but they need to be caught and handed over to the DVS so that they can be kept and fed instead of wandering here and there.
“The government also needs to be vigilant because it is feared that these dogs will carry rabies and it is better to prevent it before it happens to the people of Sipitang,” he said.
