Priority is solving Universiti Malaysia Sabah water woe, students told

Kota Kinabalu: The focus of the water supply issue at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is to fix it first before taking further action, said Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Mustapha Sakmud.
He was commenting on a recent “2 Perempuan Gila” podcast video where #kamiMahuAir Sabah Secretariat Coordinator Mohd Norhamdin Nordin demanded a rebate in accommodation fees for students whose residences were affected by the problem.

He said solving the water issue would reduce the challenges students are experiencing and advised them to be patient.
“I think the situation has improved now and we hope this will ease their worries,” he said at the Majlis Anugerah Pelajar Cemerlang Madani at Dewan Kuliah Pusat, UMS, on Saturday.
In the podcast, Norhamdin claimed they had followed the proper channels, but there was no action on their complaints.
“We have to understand that in this university system, we have the official Student Representative Council (MPP). These are the voices of only a few students.

“The majority of our students provide information to the MPP. They are also involved in gathering this information.”
He said despite factual information, some students refuse to accept and continue to accuse the State Government of irregularities.

“Get the facts straight. Don’t speak just to gain popularity without having correct facts,” Mustapha said.
He said KPT listens to the voices of students and is still open for a diplomatic resolution.
“We have given them space and this opportunity. I don’t want to take drastic measures, but if these accusations persist, we will take appropriate action,” Mustapha said.
