Kota Kinabalu: Sabah is targeting to collect at least 40 gold medals at the 21st edition of the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Sarawak this August.

State Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Angin said that based on the performance shown by the athletes, he is confident that this target can be achieved.

“So far, we have trained over 1,000 athletes, but we will make a selection and the number is expected to decrease to over 700.

“Preparations have already begun since last year, and hopefully, that target can be achieved.

“Among the events we’re targeting for gold are swimming and combat sports such as taekwondo, karate, and others.

“We hope that the athletes who have been listed to represent Sabah can continue their training diligently and with full discipline. We hope not only to see that target achieved but maybe there will be surprises from events we didn’t expect,” he said when met by the media after the closing ceremony of the Unity Sports 2024 at the sports complex, in Likas, here, Sunday.

Ellron hopes that the organisation of the Unity Sports between the Federal Youth and Sports Ministry and the Sabah Youth and Sports Ministry can further strengthen the relationship among the officers and staff involved.

“I hope that with this meeting and collaboration between the federal and state KBS, hopefully, any management involving youth and sports can be handled quickly,” he added.

The two-day sports event, which began on Saturday, was participated by 125 officers and staff from the Federal Youth and Sports Ministry and the Sabah Youth and Sports Ministry.

Meanwhile, also present at the ceremony was Federal Youth and Sports Ministry’s secretary general Dr. Nagulendran Kangayatkarasu, who led the Federal contingent and other top officials.
