Flood disaster declared in Penampang

PENAMPANG: District Officer Francis Chong declared a natural disaster in the district due to flooding on Sunday.
The decision was made after gathering reports and field information from relevant agencies and the District Disaster Management Committee (JKBD).

Penampang MP Datuk Ewon Benedick, in his official Facebook post, said the Disaster Control Centre cum Flood Victim Evacuation Centre at the Sabah Cultural Centre here was also opened at 5.25pm.
“A major flood occurred in Penampang following heavy rain in the district since 1.30pm,” he said after visiting the centre on Sunday.
“Rescue operations involving the police, the Civil Defence Force, and the Fire and Rescue Department, assisted by the WRS 4x4 Club, are ongoing to rescue and evacuate flood victims.
“However, these operations are also affected by strong currents.”

He also donated RM20,000 to the JKBD for rescue operations and other requirements at the evacuation centre.
