Kota Kinabalu smart town proposal on hold
“Today, we have not done anything because the cost is too high. It is over two billion,” Wong said. A smart city needs the availability of funds for digital transformation, data management and sharing with the latest technology and innovation with IR 4.0 for smart living.
Kota Kinabalu: City Hall (DBKK) Director General Sr Lifred Wong said a Korean group’s proposal to develop a Kota Kinabalu Smart New Township at an area behind University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) could not proceed due to lack of funds.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Federal Government and the Government of the Republic of Korea on March 13, 2019. Following this, a MoU was signed between the State Government and Koreans on Nov 25, 2019.

The seven smart pillars of the proposal include smart environment, smart living, smart people, smart economy, smart digital infrastructure, smart government and smart mobility.
