Kota Kinabalu: Asmawati Ahmad, an instructor at the Kinabalu Paragliding Club, clinched bronze in the women’s paragliding accuracy competition at the 2024 Ulaan Bataar Cup held in Mongolia recently.

The Kota Kinabalu-born pilot also secured third place in the team category with her husband, Haznain Ngamil, who is also the Vice President of the same club.

Asmawati and Haznain were the only pilots from Malaysia in the championship, which took place from June 21 to 23 in Mongolia’s capital.

The competition saw the participation of 40 men and women pilots from 10 countries, including the host country, China, South Korea, France, India and Vietnam.

Pilots from China and Mongolia clinched gold and silver respectively in the women’s category, while the team category was dominated by the Chinese team, which took the top two spots.

Talking to Daily Express, Haznain said the victory showed that Malaysian athletes can compete at an international level.

“Being able to compete with Chinese pilots, who are currently at the top of the world ranking for paragliding, indicates that our Malaysian athletes have the ability to rival them.

“This shows that Malaysia’s paragliding has room to progress further,” he said.

The 2024 Ulaan Bataar Cup was organised by the Mongolian Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association.
