Kota Kinabalu: Bridging the knowledge regarding oil and gas industry through mentorship is vital for Sabah-based companies to compete effectively in the sector as it plays a significant role in the State’s economy.

State Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship (MIDE) Permanent Secretary Datuk Thomas Logijin said the oil and gas industry in Sabah was one of the most obvious sectors that has been contributing to the State’s revenue.

It also provides career opportunities for locals.

“The industry generates significant revenue, creates employment opportunities, and fuels our state’s development.

Looking ahead, we anticipate a significant boom, and this program is crucial to ensure we have a highly skilled workforce ready to meet these future demands” he said at the launching of Sabah Mentorship Program 2.0 for the Oil and Gas Industry, here, Wednesday.

The programme saw the collaboration between the ministry along with Sabah Oil and Gas Services Council (SOGSC), Persatuan Kontraktor Petroleum Bumiputera Sabah (PKPBS) and Malaysia Oil, Gas and Energy Service Council (MOGSC) supported by Petronas.

Through certain collaboration and programmes, Logijin said those interested in the industry will be exposed with the necessary knowledge that would give them better understanding of the field.

Also present were SOGSC President Datuk Harris Anuar Tan, PKPBS President Safian Saludin, MOGSC President Syed Saggaf Syed Ahmad and SMJ Energy Sdn Bhd Corporate and Oil & Gas Services Executive Director Terry Biusing.

And with such knowledge, he said these industry players will be able to equip themselves with the apt skills that is needed to carry out their respective task while at the same time solve problems efficiently, if any.

He also said that this would be achieved easily through such programme as the industry players will be able to have discussions with one another which would lead to positive outcomes in terms of understanding.

“(Mentors should) share your expertise generously and mentees (should) actively ask questions and leverage the wisdom and experience of your mentors.

“I am confident that the programme will be instrumental in building a robust and future-proof oil and gas sector in Sabah,” he added.

The program boasts strong industry participation with 43 companies from SOGSC, 11 from PKPBS, and 35 from MOGSC.

Mentorship is a cornerstone of the initiative, pairing experienced professionals with mentees to foster knowledge transfer, collaboration, and the development of specific technical capabilities aligned with Sabah’s oil and gas tender plans.

During the event, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was reached and signed between Seatech Engineering & Maintenance Sdn Bhd and Carrier Rental Systems Asia Pte Ltd.

Pertaining to the programme, it is aimed at several objectives such as Knowledge Transfer and Skill Development in which mentorship provides a platform for experienced professionals to guide and equip mentees with the expertise needed to excel in the industry.

Aside from that, Collaboration and Smart Partnerships through the program fosters collaboration between Sabahan and non-Sabahan companies, leading to knowledge exchange and the development of strategic technical capabilities.

It is also aimed at Empowering Sabah-Based Companies in which mentees gain valuable insights and practical guidance to secure and successfully execute projects, propelling Sabah-based companies to new heights.

As well as Building a Strong Future for Sabah’s Oil and Gas Sector by nurturing the next generation of skilled professionals, the program paves the way for a brighter future for Sabah’s oil and gas industry.
