Kota Kinabalu: A new township in Kg Air is in the pipeline in Semporna to elevate the touristic district to meet visitors’ expectations.

A joint venture agreement was signed between the Housing and Urban Development Board (LPPB) which owns the 21-acre plot and developer Cepat Hebat Sdn Bhd, here, recently.

The development cost for a three and four star hotel accommodating 544 rooms, a 564 unit commercial suite and 101 unit shop lot with hypermarket space, District Office and walkway is RM478 million.

The project is estimated to complete within five years and construction is scheduled to commence in 2025.

Witnessing the signing ceremony was Sabah Deputy Chief Minister II, Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam.

“The site is full of squatter settlements. Before construction can begin we must provide the locals with a proper village.

“Forty-four acres at the nearby Kg Tinagayan has been retained for this purpose. The question is how long will it take for them to move out.

“A preliminary census revealed 200 families are involved. We will engage them further and we plan to have 500 lots ready,” he told the press.

When asked if any of them are palauhs (sea gypsies), he said, “they are now everywhere in Sabah”.

Joachim said they are not Malaysian citizens and the government would act according to the law and human rights.

Meanwhile, Joachim who is also Sabah Minister of Local Government and Housing, said since the PacifiCity mixed development had been declared abandoned, the Ministry is looking for white knights to discuss the proper means to help the affected house buyers so the project can take off again.

“We follow this format for all abandoned project regardless if it is built on government-owned land or not,” he said.

In response to Parti Warisan’s Datuk Junz Wong regarding the Penampang District Council awarding a peninsula-based company to undertake public parking fees by July, Joachim said the company is Sabah-owned.
