Complaints about high Penampang parking rates
Proof of Parking rates and banners that suddenly appeared in Donggongon.
PENAMPANG: An activist group called on the Penampang District Council to be transparent on parking fees as well as reviewing the rates.

Calling themselves “Penampang Watchers” the group released another video after banners appeared in Donggongon Town saying “Parking fees will be implemented 1st July while the parking rate signboards are still covered with black plastic bags.”

Spokesman Edwin Jomiji said they received many complaints from the public that the rates are higher than Kota Kinabalu City and the highest in Sabah.

The rates as shown in the coupon are: Red zone (RM1 per half hour) Green zone (50sen per one hour) Yellow zone (75sen per half hour) and Blue zone (30sen per one hour).

A quick check at Donggongon town shows the zone is all yellow.

Edwin said residents are not against parking fees but the rates should be reasonable.

He said public transport in the district is near zero and they no choice but to use their own vehicles.

It is better to postpone the implementation until the Council review the rates considering the high cost of living, taxes from the council such as Cukai Pintu burdening those low income groups including small traders and Tamu sellers, he said.

The planned transition to municipal status should also be reviewed considering so many issues had yet to be solved including insufficient parking, proposals of multi-storey parking, potholes, clogged drainage, broken concrete walkways, poor garbage collection, no public toilets and many non-functional street lamps.

“We were informed the parking fee collection is done via concession company, hence the details should be made public.

What is so secretive about parking,” Edwin asked adding if the Council does the fee collection, it would easily provide jobs for  locals.

He also queried what happened to the petition and survey which the Council itself carried out asking public feedback.
