Liew clarifies MM2H meeting attendance

KOTA KINABALU: Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew has refuted claims by Federal Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing that the former had not attended meetings to discuss the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) issue.

Liew said that, according to the records of the Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry (Kepkas), she had personally attended the meeting chaired by the Federal Minister on May 11, 2023, in Putrajaya.

"On occasion when I was not available, I sent representatives to attend other meetings called by Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (Motac),” she said in a statement Monday.

Liew said she was represented by officials from Kepkas and the Sabah Tourism Board (STB) in the other four meetings with Motac.

She said that out of the five meetings, Tiong chaired only three, while the other two were chaired by Motac's Secretary-General and Deputy Minister, respectively.

“According to my Ministry's reports, none of the five meetings ever discussed the MM2H programme.

"We (Kepkas) were never invited for any meeting to discuss the programme specifically," Liew said.

Liew reiterated that Sabah will proceed with its own Sabah-MM2H programme, saying Sabah and Sarawak have a different policy and should not be lumped into the programme for the peninsula.

"We concur with Sarawak's Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah that Sabah and Sarawak have our conditions for our programme," she said.

On Sunday, Tiong reportedly hit out at Liew over her criticism of Sabah’s Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) issue.

Tiong claimed that Liew has yet to attend any meetings to discuss the MM2H matter for Sabah.

He also claimed Liew did not even delegate a single representative to discuss the situation, and she had rarely attended meetings that Motac conducted.
