Kota Kinabalu: Emma Evelyn Pang, a talented 19-year-old from Sabah, has garnered attention for her art, which captures real-life scenarios with great detail and connecting it with items of the past.

In her first solo exhibition called “Memories in Colours”, she used antique props in her setting, it not only showcased her artistic flair but also invited viewers to reflect on the stories and emotions associated with the objects.

She said each item carried its own set of memories and cultural significance, and through her detailed depictions, the artifacts came alive, connecting viewers with the sentiments of bygone eras.

She has produced more than 40 artworks todate.

Attention to detail: One of Emma’s artworks on display.

She is preparing to embark on her university studies in July, a reason that inspired her to hold her first solo exhibition before departing for Singapore.

A sixth former at Kian Kok Middle School, she has nurtured a passion for the arts since the age of five.

On her first solo exhibition, her curator cum teacher, Sylvia Lim, used antique props such as traveling suitcases, knitting items, rattan chair, thermo flask, sewing machines, straw hats, radio – the pieces depicted and resonated with the sentimental values each item carried.

Sylvia said the objects and artworks together created a tapestry that evoked memories, stirring feelings of nostalgia and connection among the guests.

“Her drawings captivated art enthusiasts, for her innate creativity and keen eye for detail.

“Some of her artworks depicted past scenes, a reminder to us of moments that have slipped away.

“This would allow people to revisit and reflect on the past, making it a deeply personal and evocative experience.

“Her ability to capture the essence of each object and the era it represented set her talent and passion for storytelling through art,” Sylvia said.

The 40 guests comprised teachers, school board members and students of Kian Kok Middle School.

Also present were Datuk Clement Yeh, Managing Director of Sabah Publishing House and Tan Sri Datuk Paul Lim, Chairman of TP Group, under which Monocolo Boutique Hotel falls.

The event took place at Monocolo Boutique Hotel last Saturday.

Emma’s father is a local Chinese while her mother is a Romanian.

Sylvia noted that there are many talented students who are creative in their artwork, however, very little exposure is given to them.

“Hence, it is important to expose them to various exhibitions and assist them in any way we can to promote their work.

“Otherwise, it would be a waste if their talents are not known or appreciated,” said Sylvia.
