Kota Kinabalu markets rebranded as Anjung Kinabalu
The rebranding of Anjung Kinabalu takes inspiration from Mount Kinabalu.
Kota Kinabalu: Markets which feature souvenirs and food in the city are now branded as “Anjung Kinabalu”, said Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah.

The rebranding involved all the market and commercial premises in the State Capital, including the night market, handicraft market, Sinsuran market, fruits market and fish market.

“The name ‘Anjung Kinabalu’ is derived from other nearby premises that are also named using the word ‘anjung’, such as Anjung Senja, Anjung Selera and others.

“This will make it easier for tourists to remember the name when they come to Kota Kinabalu to find a place to buy pearls, fish or food products,” he told the media after the launching of the signboard and the month-long “Harum Kinabalu” campaign at Anjung Kinabalu, Friday.

Sabin said the rebranding aimed to eliminate the association of the commercial areas with foreign elements.

He cited the handicraft market, which was unofficially called “Pasar Filipina” among the public, and such a name was never in the records of City Hall.

“Probably it is known as such due to the fact that the goods could be from the Philippines. Actually, it used to be a settlement for Filipinos under the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, but the programme is long over,” he said.

The “Harum Kinabalu” campaign is jointly organised by Puspanita Kota Kinabalu branch and DBKK to raise public awareness on the importance of cleanliness.

Sabah Puspanita Chairman Datuk Dr Nuinda Alias said the month-long campaign in the Anjung Kinabalu area will end on July 7.

“Each party has a role in carrying out responsibilities to ensure that the environment and cleanliness are preserved and maintained so that their functions are guaranteed.

“Human progress will not be hindered because there is already a concept of sustainable development, where the sustainability of the environment and cleanliness are priorities alongside development,” she said.

Also present were State Secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong.
