70-year-old pillion rider killed in Tawau collision

TAWAU: An elderly man, 70, who was riding pillion on his friend’s motorcycle, was killed in a collision with a Perodua Alza at Km 27 Jalan Tawau-Semporna at 3.55pm, Wednesday.
Tawau District Police Chief, ACP Jasmin Hussin said, the victim’s right leg was severed and die on the spot while the 40-year-old motorcyclist suffered head injuries.

According to him, the Alza driver, 45, and his passenger were unharmed. Police received information about the incident at 4.07pm.
“Investigations by traffic police at the scene revealed that the accident occurred when the Alza driver was heading towards town from the airport.
“The motorcyclist and his pillion rider were heading from Inderasabah towards Kg Blok 31 at Jalan Apas.
“The motorcyclist was believed to have suddenly changed course to the opposite lane on the right, resulting in the crash,” he said.

Jasmin said that since the distance was too close, the driver did not have time to avoid the motorcycle and hit its rear tire on the left.
“The collision resulted in the car spinning out of control to the left road shoulder, dragging the motorcycle along with it,” he said.

The car sustained damages to its left front side while the motorcycle’s was badly damaged.
Jasmin said police are l investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
