LABUAN: Gloomy Labuan will be under a spell of boom for the next 60 days or so when thousands of workers converge here for the mega Petronas methanol plant 1 shutdown for the purpose of maintenance works.
A source said the operation is scheduled from June 10 and would last for about two months and trigger rampant economic spillover to various segments as experienced before in a similar shutdown in 2022.

During the 2022 event, some 3,500 workers were engaged by PML from the peninsula, Sarawak, Sabah and Labuan, including expatriates, in various skills to handle the works.
Most of them were skilled or semi-skilled, well paid for the short-term contract and had been good spenders.
