Kinabalu International School beat Jesselton International School to win SUP competition
KIS’ paddlers receive the Cup from the event’s official.
Kota Kinabalu: The first inter-school stand-up paddling (SUP) Kinabalu International School Cup was held recently at the Kinabalu Yacht Club here.

The Kinabalu International School (KIS) won the competition, defeating their sole competitors, the Jesselton International School (JIS).

The KIS Cup is expected to become an annual event, following the global expansion of the sport of paddleboarding, and is open to all schools in the region.

Primary and secondary students, as well as their teachers, are eligible to represent their schools at this fun watersport event.

Race Director Nick Boura explained that this initiative came up a few months ago while discussing the future of the sport with Catriona Watt, KIS’ Head of Physical Education, and Borneo Paddle Monkeys, a Sabah-based SUP operator.

Paddleboarding is the world’s fastest-growing sport, mainly because it is accessible, safe, and fun.

SUP competitions are multiplying worldwide, and it is only a matter of time until SUP becomes part of the SEA Games hopefully next year in Thailand, and eventually the Olympics.

Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew was present to witness the presentation of the Cup to KIS student Sebastien James by a Borneo Paddle Monkeys official.
