PUTRAJAYA: The body of the Malaysian climber who passed away at Mount Denali, Alaska, has been successfully recovered with the assistance of local authorities, said the Foreign Ministry through the Consulate General of Malaysia in Los Angeles, United States.

The ministry, in a statement on Sunday, said the body is currently at a local health office awaiting autopsy.

It stated that the next-of-kin of the deceased had opted for the body to be repatriated to Malaysia.

“The Consulate General of Malaysia will continue to provide consular assistance to ensure a smooth repatriation process,” read the statement.

Alpine Club Malaysia, in a Facebook post, said that the climber, Zulkifli Yusuf, 37, reportedly died at 6am (local time), on May 29, while taking shelter in a snow cave known as the ‘Football Field’.

The cause of death is suspected to be high-altitude cerebral edema and hypothermia, according to the club.
