BEAUFORT: Some 36 students and lecturers of Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s (UMS) Faculty of Tropical Forestry paid a study visit to the Fire and Rescue Station recently.

District Fire and Rescue Station Chief Muhammad Hasbullah Nenggok said the visit was to learn about fire forest equipment, forest fires, as well as its reasons and causes.

He said they have learnt a lot during the briefing as they were taught the duties of firefighters in dealing with fires, especially those involving forest fires.

“They were also shown the type of equipment suitable to put out fires.

The difficulties in extinguishing forest fires can no longer be denied, however it is the responsibility of firefighters to ensure that the environment is always protected.

“If forest fires worsen, it might destroy oil palm plantations, rubber plantations, pineapple plantations and orchards,” he said.

Therefore, he said the department often warns perpetrators of forest fires by enforcing the Environmental Quality Act and informing them of the fines and compounds that will be imposed on offenders.

Meanwhile, the Fire Department demonstrated techniques to use the equipment starting from forest fires to house fires.
