Kota Kinabalu: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has swung into action to enforce the 2024 Kaamatan Maximum Price Control Scheme throughout the State.

The scheme, in effect from May 27 to June 2, has set maximum retail prices for eight essential goods to ensure stable supplies and affordable prices during the festival period.

The controlled items include chicken portions, imported buffalo meat, small onions, garlic, dried chilies, live pigs and pork cuts.

KPDN officers will be conducting inspections and enforcement activities at markets, retailers and wholesalers under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011.

“We have deployed 193 enforcement officers and 72 price monitoring officers across Sabah to check for compliance and take actions against errant traders,” said Sabah KPDN Enforcement Chief Zulfamy Mat Udi.

He said stiff penalties, including fines up to RM500,000 and jail terms, can be imposed on violators.

KPDN Sabah has conducted inspections on 24,636 premises from January 1 until May 28, which resulted in 407 cases with a compound value of RM47,900 and an estimated seizure value totalling RM3,225,998.11.

Consumers are urged to channel any complaints through the KPDN whistleblower channels, including WhatsApp (019-848 8000), e-complaint portal (http://eaduan.kpdn.gov.my); and call centre (1-800-886-800).

The move aims to ensure all Malaysians can celebrate Kaamatan joyously without being burdened by excessive prices for essential goods.
