Sabah’s Muaythai fighters shine at Bintulu meet
D’Sha Muayfit and Sukma team members after the prize presentation.
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s Muaythai exponents shone at the 2024 Premier Cup Muaythai tournament held at the Bintulu Paragon Mall in Bintulu recently.

D’sha Muayfit from Tawau represented by 13 athletes aged 8-16 captured the overall title with 10 golds and two silvers while the State Sukma team came in second with nine golds and three silvers.

The gold medal winners for D’sha Muayfit were Hazelyn Hazel Hari Irawan (40-41kg), Alif Harith Kozy (27-28kg), Muhammad Izack David (57kg amateur), Naveel Julian (52-54kg super 4), Darrell Julian (58kg amateur), Denisha Aliyah Dendi (21-22kg amateur), Evyanka Qistina Ady (43kg-45kg amateur & best boxer), Derylino Dedy (22-23kg), Bradley Manson Wilbert (50kg-12), Harith Dazzel  Hari Irawan (22kg while the silvers came from Denise Aleesya  Dendi (34-35 kg amateur) and  Brenderry Melvin Wilbert (44kg-11 years old).

The State Sukma contingent dominated the maimuay categories by taking home all four gold medals through Myra Arina Roslan (wai kru solo women), Asyraf Danial Abdul Latif (wai kru solo men), Myra Arina Roslan, Jezzevelle Myora Jerry (mai muay duo women), Asyraf Danial Abdul Latif and Marshall Jerry (men’s mai muay duo).

The other five golds were delivered by Stacy Poong (women’s 57kg), Baxter Chong (men’s 67kg), Syafiq Ezuan (men’s 51kg), Muhammad Rahmad (men’s 48kg) and Nur Iman Madley (men’s 54kg).

The silver medal winners were Mohd Iftikhar Syahlan (male wai kru solo) and Ariesya Dania Abdul Latip (female wai kru solo).

The Sukma-bound athletes also won additional five golds and two silvers in the semi-pro bouts, but  they are not counted in the overall medal tally.

The gold medallists were Genesis Raphael (57-60kg), Dazrey Aznee (57kg), Kerry Dryan Jafili (53.5kg), Helmi Samsir (71kg) while the silvers were won by Marcella Gosikir (54kg) and Joezietha Joyssie Jackson (51kg).

State head coach Cyrille Dhillon Tahing who accompanied the Sukma team was satisfied with the achievement.

“This is only the second tournament outside the State for our Sukma athletes and they produced an excellent performance.

“However, we must not be too comfortable and have to stay focused and continue the training in preparation for the Sukma in August.

“Our next mission is to compete in the National Youth Championship and the Pre-Sukma competition in Kuala Lumpur later,” he said.

He also praised Syafiq Ezuan, Genesis Raphael, Dazrey Aznee from the Sukma team and D’sha Muayfit’s Evyanka Qistina Ady after the four were judged best boxers in the competition.

Meanwhile, Sabah Muaythai Association president Nazri Abd Razak was delighted with the discipline and commitment displayed by the athletes.

He called on them to stay on track for the games in Sarawak and also thanked all the coaches and family members for their support.
