KUNAK: Muhamad Khairul Hussainie Muhamad, a Primary Four pupil at SK Mostyn, was the recipient of the school’s Anugerah Ikon Kokurikulum during the Pupil Excellence Appreciation Ceremony, recently.

Known as MK to his friends and teachers, he achieved several honours in Taekwondo at both national and international levels.

These include finishing second in the MBW International Taekwondo Championship 2023, which at the Titiwangsa Statidum in Kuala Lumpur last August while a Blue Belt holder.

At the national level, he won bronze in the 2023 Under-12 National Junior Taekwondo Championship at the Dewan Tuanku Chancellor, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia in Negeri Sembilan.

His father, Muhamad Abdullah, said Khairul’s interest in the sport sparked after seeing his older brother compete in the Silat Cekak Hanafi martial art at SMK Madai from 2015 to 2019.

“He is frequently chosen to represent the Empire Taekwondo Club in every tournament because of his dedication and discipline in training,” he said, adding that his son usually tries to train while on family trips to Kunak, Tawau, or Kota Kinabalu.

“He used to be away from us merely to train at his coach’s home in Kiulu. Even though it was only for a week, the experience was really valuable to him before the tournament in Kuala Lumpur,” he said, adding the Empire Taekwondo Club provided his son with the opportunity to broaden his athletic horizons.

“This is because this club not only paves the way for trainees like MK, but also strives to assist them through long-term collaboration programmes such as exposure to training and tournaments in the country or overseas.

“Empire Taekwondo Club is scheduled to compete in tournaments and undertake intensive training in Korea in August,” he said.

MK’s achievements at the state level include bronze medals in two tournaments: the first East Coast Zone Taekwondo Invitation, held at the Tawau Sports Complex on June 1 - 4 last year, and the 8th Sabah Junior and Open Taekwondo Championship, held at the Keningau Complex on March 2-5, last year.

“I hope my son will one day have the opportunity to achieve his dream of representing Sabah in the sport at the Sukma Games or perhaps even the country at international level,” he said.

He also thanked the teachers at SK Mostyn and the taekwondo coaches in Sabah for helping his son flourish in the sport.

Meanwhile, Saniyah Ab Salam, Kunak District Deputy Education Officer, said parental and community support is critical in the context of transformative schools.

She said students’ success is not solely dependent on teachers’ efforts and dedication; parents must also determine their children’s future.

“This is the main factor that drives success of students to remain motivated towards achieving success,” she said.
